Toro Bravo: The Brave Bull

Torro bravo, the brave bull

Toro Bravo: The Brave Bull –  The fighting bull is renowned for its valour and will continue to attack incessantly if something or someone moves in front of it. Historians trace the Spanish bull’s origins to the wild aurochs that lived in central Europe. One of the characteristics of this brave bull (toro bravo) is that it never attacks by stealth. It warns its opponent by squaring up to it and staring fixedly. It picks up its ears, raises its head, and sometimes retreats or takes gentle steps forward before charging ahead.

The artist throws vibrant red paint in a splatter-like application across the surface of the artwork, evoking the bull’s raw energy and the chaotic conclusion of the ritual. Through this progression, the artist illustrates that while the bullfight is an art form and performance governed by ritualised control, the inherent chaos of life and death can never be restrained.
