The Bullfight 5: Farol de rodillas
Farol de Rodillas: Fast Cape Movements – The first act is largely performative. The matador demonstrates his capote (cape) skills with slow movements. Later in the fight, the capote is used both to intrigue and entrap the bull. The fluid movements, which showcase the matador’s capote techniques, provide a rhythmic structure to the performance before the actual contest begins.
The farol de rodillas is a fast flourish of the cape, with the matador or picador (lancer) starting in a kneeling position. As the bull passes, the cape is quickly opened and swirled above the matador’s head. As the cape opens, the matador moves from his knees to a standing position, allowing the bull to pass and displaying his speed, skill, agility and strength.
