Traje de Luces: Suits of Light –  The matador’s costumes are more than just a matador’s colourful costume. They represent ancient traditions of embroidery and sartorial elegance. Colours are chosen by the matador according to personal preference, superstition, status and tradition.

The combination of the montera, a traditional hat; the chaquetilla and camisa, the ornate jacket and white shirt; the taleguilla and medias, the embroidered trousers and socks; completes the costume, along with the capote or cape.

The artist depicts the medias, usually pink silk worn over white cotton. Embroidered with gold or silver, and sometimes with black Austrian knots, they serve as protection as well as the final item a matador wears before putting on the zapatillas, or traditional shoes. With this final detail complete, the matador is truly “dressed to kill”.
