Plaza de Toros: The Arena
Plaza de Toros: The Arena –Â The bullring depicts the social gathering of spectators at the arena. It is symbolised by the contrast between el sol (seats in the sun) and la sombra (seats in the shade), closer to the action, where royalty and premium ticket holders are traditionally seated.
Gestural abstraction is central to the work. The arena is depicted as a structured space in which spectators occupy fixed positions. Repetitive black impasto marks against a white ground simulate the rhythmic arrangement of the seating, representing a controlled social environment. The resulting chiaroscuro evokes shared yet socially disparate experiences, in which order and control are predetermined.
